Upscayl overview

Upscayl is a cross-platform application built with the Linux-first philosophy. This means that we prioritize Linux builds over others but that doesn't mean we'll break things for other OSes.

Upscayl does not work without a GPU, sorry. You'll need a Vulkan compatible GPU to upscale images. CPU or iGPU won't work.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

I'm still no expert but so far Upscayl seems very easy to use. Speed of processing an image is kind of slow so you need to be patient. That would be my only "complaint" if I had to give one.

I know there are many choices one can use when upscaling a photo. I do not know which one(s) I should be using so I just opted for Real-ESRGAN at X2 Upscaling and the results are very nice. If there is a way or a different setting to speed things up that would be awesome but I have not discovered it yet if it exists.

It's not free. It's not donationware. Instead, it's subscriptionware / creditware with a trial version. You buy 100 credits monthly for $9.99/mth. Use them up and you have to buy more. Yes, this is similar to many games. This software is oriented toward business, not average users. - - Keep in mind that, as with any and all "AI" software, the result you get may well be inaccurate. IOW, don't use it for critical purposes, such as facial recognition! Not kidding! What you get looks super excellent. Ooo ahh! But is it accurate? Is that really the guy in the picture you think it is? Be careful! It's "AI". 🤖 🤑

It works great on a Mac mini M2 Pro with Sonoma. The upscaling is very good and it's speed is in par with other similar utilities… but I prefer this one because I like the interface and it is open source.

This app has shown considerable improvement. Although its benefits seemed small with earlier releases, it now shows considerably more improvement than similar apps and outputs smaller file sizes. Kudos to the devs!
